Today’s Article
These are my thoughts from the weekend of sports. I also add a political announcement. I have always been politically aware and pay very close attention to the issues. I make a mild statement about our upcoming presidential election. Something came to my mind this morning and after living in Las Vegas over the last year, some issues came to mind. I will never change this format from sports to politics but couldn’t resist making my feelings known.
College Football
I have said for many years the best coaches are the coaches that have the best talent. Talent can make up for coaching errors and seem to camouflage the mistakes that a coach has. Insert Les Miles here. This has never been more apparent than in the case of Norm Chow. He was the so-called mastermind while at USC with the likes of Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and terrific wide receivers. He then went to the Tennessee Titans, UCLA and Utah as an offensive coordinator without much success. He was named the Head Coach at the University of Hawaii for this season.
Either the game has passed this 66 year old coach by or he never has the talent that he has had in the past. Is he a good coach or did he just have talent? I vote for the talent side of this equation. This is a man that has coached Jim McMcMahon, Steve Young, Philip Rivers, Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. The last 3 winning Heisman Trophies.
Anyone who watched the BYU/Hawaii game on Friday night knows that Hawaii looked like they have never been coached. The score of this game could have been 87-0 instead of 47-0. The Hawaii quarterbacks looked like they had never been coached, talk about being coached by a man held in such high regards as Chow.
Again, talent makes great coaches, great coaches can make talented players a little better but not enough to make an average player great. Chow got credit for being associated with talented players. Talented players did not gain their talent with the help of Chow. At least that is how this writer feels.
Talking coaching, while watching the game with no defense called the Baylor/W Virginia game on Saturday, I thought about coaches. Dana Holgerson fits the bill of two other so-called offensive guru’s. Throw him in with Mike Martz and Mike Leach. These coaches have such an ego and arrogance that it is obvious that they pay absolutely no time with their defenses. These coaches win games and have exciting teams but never seem to win big games. They beat up on the patsies and pull off an occasional upset but will eventually lose to someone because they do not have complete teams. I always liked Mike Leach but what has he ever won? Mike Martz won a Super Bowl with the Rams as an offensive coordinator because he did not have to worry about the defenses. Holgerson is now in with the arrogant minds of Leach and Martz who just believe they only need to stop the other team once and they will win because they are so cocky they believe they will score every time they have the ball. Art Briles, the Head Coach of Baylor, is also part of this group. He is less known than the above mentioned. I do wonder if Leach, Holgerson or Briles even recruit defensive players.
My College Football Rankings on Oct 1st
1-Alabama
2-Everyone else
NFL
It was good to have the NFL referees back on the field. Now we are talking about the happenings on the field, not the lack of control of the replacement referees.
The Jets have now lost their best 2 players in Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes. I don’t even think the Tebow can save this team. He cant play defense. This team got old and slow in a hurry. Could Rex Ryan finally have talked his way out of New York?
My pre-season pick for the Super Bowl was the Texans playing the Falcons. Both teams seem to be at the top of their games but we all know when the snow flies that teams built for all the elements seem to magically appear in the Super Bowl. In my humble opinion, the most complete team is the Texans followed closely by the 49ers. Hmmm, the 49ers playing the Falcons and the Texans playing the Patriots in the playoffs. Get your popcorn ready but then again, we have plenty of football to play. Some team will ruin that party, I am sure.
The biggest surprise this season is not the Cardinals. I knew they had a top notch defense and were going to be good, not great. The biggest surprise is definitely the Minnesota Vikings. They were horrendous and I thought that Leslie Frasier needed to update his resume. Not anymore, after one quarter of the season, the Vikings appear to be strong with all aspects of the game. They definitely have shown that on special teams. If Christian Ponder can continue to mature, they may have an impact on the NFC North. Maybe it is Jim Schwartz who needs to update that resume.
Ryder Cup
TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT (Choke)
MLB
The season ends this week and living in Vegas, I don’t think anyone cares about the season ending. Maybe it is the added playoff team but I don’t hear anyone talking about about the MLB playoffs unless their team is in.
I have said for years, Baseball is America’s pastime and Football is America’s passion.
Politics
I definitely am not trying to start a discussion on politics but this hit me this morning. I drove by the Social Services office of Nevada this morning and saw some people wearing Obama t-shirts. This triggered this thought.
I feel that President Obama is for the low income or impoverished people. I feel that Mitt Romney is for the Upper class or wealthy. Who is for the middle class? The 40 yr old couple that makes 40k a year, pay their bills but is struggling living week to week. I am more interested in the man that has the interest of the majority of people in mind than any one class.
If a person is getting free money and free food, why do they want to go to work? I saw this last week where someone asked a person here in Vegas, “How are you doing?” Their response, “I am broke and struggling but I still have my gambling money.” After laughing about it, I felt that described many in our country. We will survive.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all about helping our fellow man. In fact, I also have needed assistance as I lost my job. If a person truly needs help then we should help them. The problem I have with all of the government programs is that many of those people can and should be working. Then again, If you get free money and free food, why go to work?
The problem with our country is jobs. We need more of them. We need employers to hire people and get everyone to work. I see it everyday in Vegas, Employers hire many part time employees so they do not have to pay benefits. Then they demand more of their full time employees rather than hiring more. Remember the people on top aren’t taking a pay cut to provide employment opportunities. They are going to make their money, they are the owners who had the capital to start their business. Before you get all up in arms about a tax cut for the wealthy, maybe they will invest that extra money in a new business or in more employees to grow their business. We need jobs and I am for a detailed plan that means jobs. I haven’t heard that from any of the candidates yet.
I love Obama’s optimism in the face of a serious problem and I believe that the United States needs to be run like a business. Cut some people from getting free money and food and provide jobs for these people. I do believe that if we ended all of the programs available, this country would be in the middle of the biggest crime wave in history. Let us make sure that the people that deserve assistance receive it and those that don’t deserve assistance get back to work.
It wont matter because even if they are broke and struggling, they will still find a way to have their gambling money.

I apologize that I am ending the Living with Sportz College and NFL TOP PICKS. I have done the picks for the last 3 seasons with excellent results. I spend numerous hours researching each and every game. My goal was to make my readers money and then they would share a portion of their winnings with me through donations.
For the first time since I began doing this 3 years ago, I have not received any donations in the last 3 weeks. I know times are tough, in fact, I know this more than most. It also may be due to limited readers or since they are free, there is no need to donate. I understand all of these reasons. I bare no hard feelings to anyone and hope that each and every one of you have enjoyed my picks every week including the Bowl season and NFL playoffs where I pick each and every game.
I have been contacted by a couple groups of bettors that want my picks and have offered me a percentage of the winners. They did not like that I also gave my best plays to my readers for free. I also understand this and am going to end my posting of my TOP PICKS effective immediately.
I will continue to do the research and hard work in both college and NFL Picks. If you are interested in having yourself or group get my picks or have an idea for both of us to profit please email me. (rayklu66@aol.com) Please send me your plan. I care about my readers but this is an enormous amount of work to do for free any longer.
Again, I apologize for this inconvenience and wish everyone only the best in the future. We are all “Living with Sportz.”

Today’s Article
I thought I would share a few of my thoughts from this past weekend. It was truly an exciting weekend in sports so here we go.
College Football
Is there any doubt who the best team in college football is right now? Alabama rolls into Arkansas and leave Fayetteville with a 52-0 drubbing. It is still early in the season and believe me, plenty of football to take place but Nick Saban never rebuild, he reloads. I know that the Hogs were missing starting quarterback and pre-season Heisman candidate, Tyler Wilson but he would not have made much difference in this one as the Tide keep rolling. Has a motorcycle ride ever impacted a college football team as much as the joy ride taken by Bobby Petrino? Hope he had fun, he impacted many lives by his immature actions.
I have always hated pre-season college football polls. I think we get a better take on college football after 3-4 weeks of action. USC was ranked #1 by the AP and after only 3 games they have already suffered their first loss of the season. Believe me, it didn’t take (Luck) to knock off the Trojans. It took a prepared, physical team and Stanford was up for the challenge. Goodbye National Championship and Heisman Trophy to the Men of Troy. Does Matt Barkley regret his decision now? Only time will tell.
I wonder what happened to Colorado football? I lived in Colorado for many years and cannot believe how bad they have become? Is there hope on the horizon? I don’t think so. The state of Colorado is all about the Broncos and all 3 major college football programs, (Colorado, Colorado State and Air Force) are far below what they were only 10 years ago. Bring back the days of Bill McCartney, Sonny Lubick and Fisher DeBerry. Then again, the Broncos have Peyton Manning so nobody in Colorado cares. Maybe they are all suffering from altitude sickness.
My last thought about college football this week has to do with the Big Ten. What the heck happened? Lets face it, the conference isn’t that good anymore. After Michigan State lost to Notre Dame, the Big Ten lost their last chance of having a team play for a National Championship this year. When was the last time after 3 weeks of action you could say that? I admit that I am a Wisconsin fan and very disgruntled with the plan and team that the Badgers have. That being said, I am happy that Urban Meyer is at Ohio State and they will be relevant very soon in the national landscape of college football. Wisconsin won the last two Big Ten titles, I sure hope Badger fans enjoyed it while it lasted. It will be a very long time before that happens again.
NFL
It appeared to me that the biggest story in the NFL Week 2 was the end of the game in the NY Giants/Tampa Bay game while listening to all of the talking heads on Monday morning. I found this as a non story. Who cares that Tampa Bay played hard on the kneel down by the beloved Eli Manning? Not this writer. Eli had a hell of a day and I do credit the Giants for not giving up but the top story in the NFL? I don’t think so.
The top story in the NFL Week 2 is a toss-up. It is between the major upset of the Patriots by the Arizona Cardinals or the unbelievably stupid play by Josh Morgan at the end of the Redskins/Rams game. I watched every game on Sunday and the winner of the top story to me is “How Stupid Can You Be?’ Josh Morgan should have his mental capacity tested. How valuable is Courtland Finnegan to any team? It was proven on Sunday. Finnegan irritated the Redskin receivers all day long and in the end it paid dividends. The NFL’s dirtiest player won the game for the Rams by forcing Morgan to throw the ball at him after the play ended that had the Redskins in field goal territory. Finnegan is a player that everyone hates, unless, of course he plays on your team. Rams fans love him today.
They named a movie that describes the first two weeks of the NFL. It is called “Any Given Sunday.” How else do you explain teams looking so good in week 1 only to look so bad in week 2. The biggest example of this is the Dallas Cowboys, they looked like world beaters on opening night in New York only to look like also-rans after visiting Seattle. They had 11 days to prepare for this game and were never in this game dominated by the Seahawks who lost in Week 1 to the Arizona Cardinals.
After two weeks of NFL action, the best team in the NFL is the San Francisco 49ers and the worst team in the NFL is the Oakland Raiders. These two teams are separated by only a few miles of real estate. How many Raider fans have switched their alliance to the Niners? Coach Harbaugh, it is coach Allen on line 1 calling for help.
On a side note, the Living with Sportz NFL TOP PICKS are currently 7-2 with tonight’s game pending. I have a good feel for the NFL so far this season. I hope it continues, now if I get my College picks going as I am currently 9-10. No worries, I always have winning seasons. Make some $$$ and check them out every Saturday and Sunday right here. Tonight’s pick is posted below this article on my blog.
MLB
I know that Buck Showalter is getting all the press for his work with the Orioles this year. The perennial cellar dwellar, Orioles, have had a terrific season and Showalter deserves many of the accolades he is receiving. My vote for manager of the year is not Showater though, it is for Bob Melvin for his work with the Oakland A’s. The Orioles just completed a 3 game series with the A’s in Oakland, with the A’s taking 2 out of 3. Case closed but then again, Melvin never worked at ESPN and will never get the press for what he has done in Oakland. Be honest, How many of you could have named the manager of the A’s before reading this article?
I was against adding an extra wild card to the MLB playoff picture. Then again, I have changed my mind. It has made following the last few weeks of MLB action exciting. Bring on more playoff teams, it seems to work in every other major sports league, ask the LA Kings who became the first 8 seed to win the Stanley Cup last season. Hard to say for an old school guy like myself.
NASCAR
The Nascar Chase (playoffs) began yesterday and once again competed against the NFL for television viewers. When will they learn? I watched all of the NFL from the comfort of the Bellagio Race and Sports book on Sunday and they had every NFL game on all of their big and small screens while having the Nascar race a small screen in the corner of the room. I have written many articles about Nascar needing to move their races to Tuesday nights to no avail. When will they learn? I enjoy Nascar but I LOVE football. So does most of America. Nascar cannot and will never compete against any football being college or the NFL. Move the races or continue to suffer the consequences. Your playoffs started and the NFL is in week 2, how many of you watched the entire Nascar race without switching to the NFL games? The answer is less than 1 percent of you.

I struggled last week in college football losing some very close games to the spread. I did win my TOP PICK of Arizona State as they trounced the Illini. I look to get back on track this week and keep my undefeated TOP PICK record. I also went 4-1 in the NFL Top Picks losing only the Broncos/Steelers Under with the last minute pick 6 thrown by Big Ben. The NFL Picks will be available soon. Here we go into the 3rd week of College Football TOP PICKS.
I look at each game on the schedule and analyze each game separately. I admit to being a Wisconsin fan but after looking at every game, I am going with the Badgers as this week’s TOP PICK.
Missouri went off the board after the original post due to injury. I will not be including this game in my picks. I will only have 6 games this week. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Missouri went off the board after the original post due to injury. I will not be including this game in my picks. I will only have 6 games this week. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

I had a good week last week going 4-2. I also had Miami as my Top Pick and the Hurricanes were an easy cover of 11 points and led by 18 with 3 minutes left in the game after falling behind 14-0 early in their game against Boston College. I am looking forward to another big week ahead.
